Most architecture in the state is a mix of the traditional Hindu South with
the arch and dome of the Islamic north.
Bangalore
is replete with public buildings, which have hybrid architecture - European,
classical or Graeco-Roman style, with variegated admixtures of Indo-Saracenic
and Dravidian elements here and there.
Nothing exemplifies hybrid architecture in Bangalore than the Vidhana Soudha,
which is a carefully conceived blend of Dravidian and other styles of
architecture evolved in the country, for eg: the jharokas or
audience-balconies are strikingly Rajasthani.
The typical home
Today Bangalore is replete with apartments that have become representative
of the cosmopolitan nature of the city. However, traditional homes in
Karnataka are known more for their ornamentation more than the architecture.
The usually austere walls of Islamic architecture in the Deccan here give
way to a petrified scrollwork indistinguishable from Vijayanagar decoration,
the bleak black volcanic granite of Bijapur manipulated as if it were soft
as plaster, as delicate as a lace ruff.
