When you plan a travel, especially a holiday with the entire family, there
are many aspects to consider. Tickets, hotel bookings in the destination,
transportation, budgets, - all these rattle the mind.
What is very important however, is care for your home when you are away.
Practise these small, helpful tips and enjoy a holiday without the fear of
burglary!!
DO….
- Check that all the doors and windows are properly locked and bolted
before you leave.
- Notify the nearest police station about your travel plans and give
them your contact telephone number and address.
- Arrange with the post office not to deliver your mail until you
return. An overflowing mailbox, or a heap of letters lying on your
verandah, is a dead give-away that the house owner is away.
- Ensure that all your vehicles are properly locked and petrol removed
if possible.
- Cancel the daily deliveries of newspapers and milk in advance, so that
there is no tell-tale pile of papers and milk sachets at your doorstep,
revealing your absence.
- Leave a spare key with a trusted friend/relative/neighbour, and
request him/her to check on the house occasionally.
DO NOT….
- Store valuables like jewellery, cash and share certificates in the
house while you’re away. Remove them to a bank locker before you leave.
- Leave a note stuck on your door, saying you’re away on vacation.
That’s like issuing a formal notification to the burglar.
- Hide keys in conventional places like flowerpots. Burglars know where
to look for them.
- Leave the house in darkness. Have a couple of zero-watt lights on
inside.
