A small balcony
would suffice to bring in nature with its variegated colours. A little
gomphrena, some marigold, palms, petunias, cyprus and voila there’s our very own patch of nature. (all these plants are available very easily at local nurseries).
The colourful marigold can be grown in all types of soil and climate all the year round. A little moisture in the soil and a sunny situation is enough for the successful growing of all types of
marigolds. They can be grown in almost all the seasons except in winter.
The cyprus sedge or umbrella, is one plant that stays green throughout, thriving on soggy soil and over watering. As potted plants they are stately with their erect stems and
symmetrical leaf arrangement. These plants are semi aquatic in nature and require large quantities of water. Ensure a steady supply and see them grow with gay abandon.
Palms kept indoors require direct sunlight. They should be kept near a sunny window and should be kept watered only when the top soil is dry. Gomphrena, the small round brilliantly coloured flowers in vivid colours of purple, yellow, white and deep pink are a pleasure wherever they are grown, indoors and outdoors. It is a never say die, annual and easy to grow plant. The flowers being long lasting, make excellent floral arrangements.
Winter annuals
like petunias produce a profusion of big trumpet shaped flowers in bright colours. The flowers look gorgeous whether grown in beds, pots or hanging baskets. As they are winter annuals, the seeds should be sown in November. They grow well protected from harsh light. They need a rich porous soil to grow, carpeting the bed or pot with beautiful flowers.
Of course there are more such varieties, that can be easily grown. After all they are those ‘can take care of themselves varieties’.
Place a jar of fresh flowers, in contrasting colours on your work table, picked straight from your own garden and feel the difference. There is a kind of optimism effused by a spectacular splash of colours.
So, wake up to a glorious garden. Not only do they bring an abundant display of blooms to your very own patch of garden they could help us breathe cleaner air, and lead a healthier life despite the odds.
Plant a garden and plant happiness.
